Changing your wax guards regularly keeps your hearing aids clear of blockages and able to deliver sound into your ear canal. Our Audiology team recommends changing the wax guards every month, or sooner, if your hearing aids are not sounding as expected.

How to remove the old wax guard:
- Remove the dome from the receiver.
- Open the package of wax guards from your kit and remove one of the tools. Each tool has one end with a new wax guard on it (white end) and one end with a little hook or tip to remove the old wax guard.
- Insert the removal tip straight into the end of the receiver wire where the used wax guard sits. Then, pull the tool straight out. When the tool is removed, the old wax guard should come out with it. It is important to pull it straight and not in an angle.
How to insert the new wax guard:
- Now, turn the same tool around to see the end with the fresh wax guard.
- Push the fresh wax guard straight into the end of the receiver wire.
- Pull the tool straight out. Your new wax guard will remain in place. Clean your dome and reattach it or attach a new dome.
Pro tip:
Changing the wax guard is a common troubleshooting procedure, along with a good cleaning. If you run into issues with low or no sound, always start by changing the wax guards and domes as a first step.
Hearing aids should not be used without a wax guard installed for any amount of time. Using a hearing aid without a wax guard can cause permanent damage to the receiver.
