If your self-tuning hearing test showed “some of your responses were outside of our typical self-tuned fitting range,” don't worry! Many factors can affect your test results, and not all of them are related to your actual hearing loss. That's why it's best to start by ruling out the factors below.
1. Background noise or interruptions during the test
Yes, the app checks for background noise while you’re taking the self-tuning test, but even small amounts of noise or distractions can make test tones harder to hear. If you struggled to hear or concentrate because of noise or interruptions, your results may appear worse than your actual hearing loss.
What to do: Find a completely quiet space, away from conversations, TVs, and other sounds. Stay quiet during the test so you don't miss any tones. Even if the app didn't warn you about background noise, a quieter space may help.
Think noise or distractions affected your results? Find a quiet place, then retake the test.
2. Wax buildup in your hearing aids
If you took the self-tuning hearing test right after taking your hearing aids out of the box, this likely isn't an issue. But if you’ve worn them for a few days before taking the test and are prone to wax buildup, it may have collected in the domes or wax guards, making test tones harder to hear.
What to do: Replace the domes and wax guards using the supplies included in your kit.
Think wax buildup affected your results? Replace the domes and wax guards, then retake the test.
3. Issues with the domes or wires
Using the right domes for the test and making sure your receiver wires fit securely are both important for accurate test results.
What to do:
- Domes: For accurate results, it’s important you use tulip domes for the test. These are the ones that came attached to your hearing aids, and come in one size that fits most. If they’re not a perfect fit, try to insert them as comfortably and securely as you can for the test. You can then switch to other domes after the test, if needed.
- Receiver wires: If your wires are too short or too long to position your hearing aids comfortably and securely, you may need a different size. If this applies to you, follow the instructions below to request the correct size wire and wait to retake the test until your new wires arrive.

If you get similar results after retaking the test
It’s ok! If your test conditions were good, an out-of-range result can mean your hearing loss may be more significant than mild to moderate. But it's important to know you'll receive this message in the app even if only one frequency in one ear falls outside our self-tuned fitting range.
The good news? If you applied the tuning, the app programmed your hearing aids as closely as it could to your specific hearing needs.
Your programming is tailored to your results wherever they fall within our self-tuned fitting range. For anything outside that range, the app applies an “upper limit” to provide as much support as our self-tuned programming allows. The “upper limit” is the maximum amount of amplification our self-tuning process provides for any particular frequency.
